More than 900 biotech companies with 50,000 employees are active in Germany. Many of them started small as spin-offs from universities. Today, many of them are extremely successful and globally active. The Corona pandemic has drawn public attention to the German biotechnology industry like no other event before. Since the Mainz-based BioNTech became the first company to bring a vaccine developed based on mRNA technology to approval in cooperation with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, many have a better idea of the importance of biotechnology and the business model of the originally small start-up BioNTech.

But the German biotechnology industry has much more to offer than the development of a Corona vaccine at the speed of light.
