Health – Made in Germany export initiative holds annual meeting
The Health – Made in Germany export initiative of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) helps companies in the German healthcare industry to enter into new markets overseas. On 13 March, the initiative held its annual meeting at the BMWi in Berlin.

BIO Deutschland participates in panel discussion about ECJ ruling on genome editing methods
The Biotechnologische Studenteninitiative (btS) held a panel discussion in the Berlin as part of its ScieCon job fair. Its aim was to have representatives from the various stakeholders exchange views on the judgment of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) regarding the regulation of organisms modified by new and innovative breeding techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9.

Opinion issued upon request of health ministry regarding ECJ ruling on mutagenesis techniques
Similar to a request of the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) (see here), the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) asked BIO Deutschland in late January 2019 to deliver an opinion. This again concerned whether the recent judgment of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) – stipulating that organisms whose genome was edited using new molecular genome-modifying techniques are to be classified as genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for the purposes of the EU Directive 2001/18/EC – is also applicable to the use of GMOs in closed systems.

Last year, BIO Deutschland and seven other trade associations promoted a national e-health vision through a discussion paper, talks with several specialist policymakers and a parliamentary evening with German Health Minister Jens Spahn.

German biotech sector attracts record investment
German biotech firms raised more capital in 2018 than ever before. Previously unpublished figures show, according to research by the biotechnology industry association BIO Deutschland, that more than one billion euros of venture capital and other equity investment flowed into the industry, whereby particularly large inflows of capital to two companies contributed to the good overall result.

The median salaries for various positions in the biotech industry have in some cases seen high single or double-digit increases in the past two years, according to a salary comparison study conducted by the biotech industry association BIO Deutschland.

Anniversary event: 20th annual CEO & CFO Meeting held in Berlin
On 6 and 7 December, some 90 German biotech executives gathered at the Bristol Hotel on Berlin’s Kurfürstendamm for the 20th annual CEO & CFO Meeting. The two-day anniversary get-together gave the participants an opportunity to discuss the current state of the industry and engage in networking.

Parliamentary evening focuses on e-health strategy
A cross-sectoral parliamentary evening was held in Berlin in December to discuss Germany’s e-health strategy. The event came out of a collaboration of eight trade associations – BIO Deutschland, Bitkom, bvitg, BVMed, SPECTARIS, VDGH, vfa and ZVEI – who released a joint position paper in the middle of the year calling for the establishment of a dialogue platform to formulate an e-health strategy.
