BIO Deutschland Organises Rally on YouTube for the European Biotech Week

The European Biotech Week took place from 30 September to 4 October 2013 at the initiative of EuropaBio to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA. Despite the public holiday in Germany on 3 October, BIO Deutschland decided at short notice to support this important campaign and organised a media event on YouTube, where association members uploaded videos to a channel set up for the event.

The motto, “Show us what you’ve got”, generated a wide range of entries, including material on the biotech involved in baking pizzas, treating infectious diseases, producing biofuels and using DNA analysis to identify war victims.

 The following members of BIO Deutschland submitted videos:

  • Eppendorf Vertrieb Deutschland GmbH
  • GATC Biotech AG
  • MorphoSys AG

The videos with the highest number of views were awarded a prize. The entrants welcomed the competitive nature of the event, which they regarded as an opportunity to show their work in a new way to a wide audience.

The winners of the five-day competition were: 

First place              MorphoSys AG: “Engineering the Medicines of Tomorrow”

Second place        BIO.NRW: “Malte Hirsekorn and the Bio(technology) Pizza”

Third place            QIAGEN GmbH: “DNA Identifies War Victims”

 Including Germany, twelve European countries participated in the European Biotech Week and helped to make the campaign a success by holding 60 events. EuropaBio is planning to hold the biotech week again next year and BIO Deutschland is also planning to take part.
