BIO Deutschland was invited to participate in the 12th Biotech NetWorkshop as part of the panel discussion “Biotech 2030 – Trends, perspectives and challenges.” The discussion was led by Horst Domdey, Managing Director of BioM Biotech Cluster Development GmbH, and included company representatives Saskia Biskup of CeGat GmbH and Christian Schetter of Rigontec GmbH as well as investors Karl Nägler of GIMV and Marco Winzer of the High-Tech Gründerfonds. A broad range of topics was discussed, ranging from technology trends to innovation funding and touching on exciting questions such as how Germany could perform well in the race between China, the United States and Europe in the implementation of new technologies and whether Germany’s local conditions provide sufficient support for these endeavours. The panel also discussed with the public the uneasy feeling that, due to a lack of alternatives, the German biotechnology industry is being sold off to foreign countries, as well as the question of how counterproductive it could be to stop, reallocate or delay GO-Bio funding for biotechnology start-ups, in light of the declining number of new companies in the sector.
