BIO Deutschland takes part in SAP Industry Talk

On 8 February, BIO Deutschland’s Managing Director Viola Bronsema participated in the SAP Industry Talk for Chemicals & Life Sciences. The digital discussion format focuses on the trends, challenges and opportunities for the chemicals and life sciences industries in 2022. Topics discussed included the potential of biotechnology and the huge synergies being generated by digitalisation. During the discussion, Bronsema stressed how much BIO Deutschland’s members have been involved and are still involved in helping fight the pandemic, be it through the production of diagnostic testing devices and kits, through services such as plasmid and enzyme production, through the development of antiviral drugs or through the creation of innovative vaccines. The sector is growing rapidly, with hiring up 10 percent, revenues up 36 percent and R&D spending up 37 percent.

She also highlighted the convergence of innovative technologies, pointing out that biotechnology experts in science and industry are generating a vast amount of omics data – such as genomics, proteomics and metabolomics. These can these be utilised to benefit humankind, but only when analysed by the right algorithms. Many of the new business models of biotech start-ups are based on IT expertise harnessed for biotechnological applications. Such ventures are deep tech start-ups that can develop sustainable products for our future – not only in the healthcare sector through advanced therapy medicines, but also in the areas of novel foods and sustainable bio-based manufacturing.
