Bioeconomy: BIO Deutschland attends consultations on strategy for EXPO 2015 in Milan

At the beginning of March 2011, Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed Germany’s participation in EXPO 2015 in Milan on behalf of the Federal Government. The topic of EXPO 2015 is Feeding the Planet – Energy for Life.

Central federal associations and trade associations including BIO Deutschland were invited to a meeting in Frankfurt/Main in January 2012 by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, which is responsible for the German Pavilion at global EXPOs. The aim of the meeting was to suggest proposals and ideas for Germany’s presentation in Milan and to include them in a portfolio to be handed to creative agencies, architects and other organisations involved in designing the German Pavilion.

BIO Deutschland suggested that the bioeconomy should be one of the most important topics. Not only have two federal ministries – the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection – joined forces in the national research strategy, BioEconomy 2030, but the Federal Government’s High-Tech Strategy also includes this field. Among other things, the bioeconomy involves important aspects of sustainable food production in Germany in conjunction with the rest of the world in the future, ecological energy generation from biomass, and the supply of safe foodstuffs to an ever growing and increasingly aging global population.

The portfolio is to be completed by the end of March.
