Biology in the Upper Forms in Thuringia: First Results Following a Joint Association Statement

In April 2007, BIO Deutschland and other associations (including VdBiol) expressed their opposition to the plans by the Thuringian Ministry of Education to refuse Abitur (A level equivalent) status to biology in the upper forms, as well as to abolish the subject combination of chemistry and biology.

As a result of pressure from the associations and lobby groups, the Ministry of Education has now published a model in which biology once again receives equal treatment as a natural science. In accordance with this model, pupils also have to take a natural science as a subject with extra requirements (4 hours). In addition, physics has the status of a compulsory subject.
