files/tlf_content/nachrichten/2011/Biotechnica_Stand_2011_I.JPG“Sustainability, entrepreneurship and progress – what does biotechnology deliver?” The Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), along with BIO Deutschland, other  DBU project partners (ChemBioTec, Chiracon GmbH, Enzymicals AG and SeSaM-Biotech GmbH), as well as this year’s winner of the Biotechnica-Award, the Swiss technology transfer organisation, Unitectra, had the answers to this question at Biotechnica 2011.

The topics, “White Biotechnology – Reconciling Ecology and the Economy”, the application of academic research for the benefit of consumers, entrepreneurship and progress, as well as the association’s work on behalf of innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (iSMEs)  were presented. Products that are already on the market thanks to the activities of biotech companies (cheese, toothpaste, cosmetics, cancer tests, medicines, washing powder, jeans, etc.) were also displayed.

By way of illustration, these products were exhibited on a “shop shelf”. The material was kindly provided by biotechnologie.de.

The stand was specially designed for journalists, international delegations, groups of school pupils and students, and political groups. As well as providing information on biotechnology and its actors in Germany, the stand’s café served as a meeting point and discussion venue.

During the Biotechnica opening press conference on 5 October, Viola Bronsema, Managing Director of BIO Deutschland, described the potential of the biotech sector and the current parameters. She stressed the importance of iSMEs for Germany as an economic location and called again on the political sphere to remove obstacles to innovation and stop the current tax discrimination in comparison with other industrial sectors.
