EU Pharmaceutical Dialogue in Brussels
Oliver Schenk, member of the European Parliament, invited other members of the European Parliament, Commission representatives, and selected associations, including BIO Deutschland, to participate in the European Pharmaceutical Dialogue in Brussels. The industrial healthcare sector is one of Europe's key drivers of innovation and value creation. With its pharmaceutical, medical technology, e-health, and biotechnology sectors, it creates high-quality jobs, strengthens economic performance, and makes a decisive contribution to security of supply, as Schenk explains in his accompanying letter to the invitation. His goal for the newly launched dialogue is to engage in discussion with representatives from EU institutions, science, industry, and associations to create framework conditions for innovation, supply, and production—so that Europe remains a leading location for medical progress in the future. The agenda for the first meeting included a presentation by Rainer Becker from the Directorate-General (DG) SANTE on current legislation and a presentation by Veronica Manfredi, DG ENV, on the topic of "Environmental policy meets industrial policy – the Urban Waste Water Directive in the context of pharmaceutical competitiveness." During the exchange, BIO Deutschland raised the specific characteristics of the biotechnology industry in the health economy and bio-based ecosystem. The group will meet regularly, both in person and via video conference.
