On 21st February, stakeholders from EU institutions, member states and industry gathered in Brussels for the European High-Level Summit on Biosolutions to discuss how to make quick progress so that Europe does not fall behind in this field. The European Biosolutions Coalition (EBC), which hosted the event, also released a manifesto at the meeting that includes policy recommendations for governments. The manifesto can be downloaded here: www.eubiocoalition.eu/globalassets/billedarkiv/kampagnesites/biosolution-coalition/policy-recommendations-from-the-european-biosolutions-coalition-2024_web.pdf?v=240222

Various use cases from the food tech sector were presented at the summit. The European Novel Food Regulation was cited as a challenge by many of the participating companies, particularly because of its long and cumbersome approval procedures. Viola Bronsema, Managing Director of BIO Deutschland, and Cay Horstmann, Secretary of the association’s Working Group on the Industrial Bioeconomy, took part in the meeting in Brussels. In the concluding symposium, representatives of various member organizations of the Coalition discussed the next steps required to move the industry forward.

BIO Deutschland joined the EBC at the beginning of the year. The Coalition is an initiative launched by the business and employers’ organisation Danish Industry (DI) and counts as members a number of industrial organisations from other European countries.
