International News: BIO Deutschland to Contribute to the Statement for the Copenhagen Protocol

The eyes of the world will be on Copenhagen in December. A UN Climate Conference will decide on a replacement for the so-called Kyoto Protocol in the Danish capital. With the aim of having biotechnology included in the new protocol as a tool for solving many of the current climate problems, BIO Deutschland is working on a position paper in cooperation with industry representatives and other biotechnology organisations worldwide, which should be taken into account over the course of the pre- Copenhagen negotiation meetings (in Bangkok at the end of September/beginning of October and in Barcelona in November) and included in the signing of the final document in Copenhagen.

Apart from the inclusion of the advantages of innovations from biotechnology as important tools for solving many urgent environmental problems worldwide, BIO Deutschland will also promote the fair protection of biotechnological inventions, as the safeguarding of intellectual property serves as an incentive for new types of technology that are in turn beneficial to everyone.
