Press release: German biotech sector records above-average growth
A study on the national health account in Germany, which was presented on 13 March in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), shows that the biotechnology sector is growing at an above-average rate and thus has great potential. The gross value added in health-related biotechnology is projected to be €8.8 billion in 2016, with an annual growth rate of 5.7 percent. The number of people employed in health-related biotechnology – currently approximately 53,000 – is also increasing at about 4 percent a year.
“We have long stressed how important value creation in the biotechnology sector is for the German economy. Biotechnology’s contribution to the German health sector has been quantified for the first time, clearly underlining the potential there is in this key technology,” said Peter Heinrich, chairman of the board of BIO Deutschland. “The growing number of employees also highlights the sector’s dynamism,” added Heinrich.
