Statement on compulsory licences for coronavirus vaccine production

Coronavirus vaccine production needs to be ramped up quickly to ensure global supplies as soon as possible. However, the granting of compulsory licences, as some are now calling for, does not automatically create new production capacities, but instead harms the innovation process in the long term. Expanding vaccine production necessitates cooperation between companies, of which there are already numerous examples – and not just in Germany. This was the assessment of BIO Deutschland on the occasion of a public hearing in the Bundestag on the approval of patents for vaccines.
